Space City Con FAQs
When is Space City Con 2013?
Space City Con begins Friday morning, August 2nd, and runs through the weekend, ending Sunday, August 4th. It's three-day geek festival of comics, sci-fi, fantasy, gaming, literature, and art. It includes tabletop tournaments, role-playing groups, artist and author panels, masquerade, battle-pods, and much more.
Where is Space City Con?
The Marriott Houston Westchase: 2900 Briarpark Drive, Houston, TX 77042. Space City Con includes the Grand Pavilion, Grand Foyer, and several ballrooms and meeting rooms - effectively, as much of the whole ground floor as we can fill! Registration will be on the west side, the left side large entrance of the hotel, so please don't line up in the lobby for your membership badge.
Is there a cost?
Parking is free (except for Valet spots). There is a membership cost to attend the events inside the convention, which you can find under “Registration” on the toolbar. The cost varies based on how early you purchase online, or at the door, and by age group. Children 9 and under are free with a paid adult, two children per adult.
Why did you choose the Marriott Houston Westchase?
We want the entire convention experience to be awesome! The Marriott is a great big place for all of us to congregate, with beautiful facilities and superb service. Parking is free! It is in Houston's Westchase district off of Westheimer, so there are plenty of restaurants and stores close by.
Do you have hotel discounts available?
Yes! If you've ever been to a convention, you know there are late events, and so much to do, so many new friends to make, networking and interactives. See the Contact tab, under Hotels, for the Group rate discount on rooms and suites, too! If you call, make sure you ask for our Group rate.
Where do I park?
There are over 1000 spots at the Marriott! Come early, stay late, stay the weekend! Standard parking is free!
How do I pre-register for the best price?
Memberships online are at a discount! Get them now, because the cost goes up as the event gets closer. You can pre-register on the Space City Con Website: http://spacecitycon.com/registration.html.
Teens, students, senior citizens, and active members of the US Armed Services may purchase a discounted membership. There are also special VIP memberships with extra perks and first-in-line benefits.
How do I get my membership badge?
If you pre-register online by August 1st, your badge will be available on-site beginning Thursday, August 2nd at Noon, the day before Space City Con 2013 begins. Otherwise, you can buy and pick up your membership (at full price) on Friday morning, August 2nd when registration opens.
What should I bring?
Grab your friends and family, and bring them to the summer Geek Festival of Houston! Wear comfortable clothing (including shoes) and bring your photo ID (to pick-up your membership badge). Wear a costume if you'd like - plenty of other folks will be!
Space City Con is a place to celebrate shared interests and make new friends, so it would also be a good idea to bring your favorite card game, minis, or tabletop game.
Are there age restrictions to Space City Con?
Space City Con welcomes attendees of all ages! Because of our guest onsite charity, Kids Need to Read, children 9 years old and under get in for free, if accompanied by a paid adult. Any other attendees should purchase the appropriate membership, taking advantage of early discounts online.
Is there a cost for celebrity guest autographs or photos?
Each guest is different. Please be aware some of the guests will charge for their printed photos, autographs, and at-the-table pictures or professional photo ops. Some guests may have special items on sale at their table, such as a guest artist with prints they sign, or a guest author with copies of their book, music, or T-shirts.
I’m planning on flying in. What do I do?
You can fly into Bush Intercontinental Airport or Houston Hobby Airport (See airport websites here: http://www.fly2houston.com/IAH) From there, you will either need to rent a car, pay for a cab, borrow a short-range teleporter, ride a dragon, etc. to get to the Marriott Houston Westchase.
Are there any special accommodations for disabled attendees?
The ground floor of the Marriott has easy access to most rooms. Please let us know at registration desk if you have a need one of our volunteers can assist with.
Can I bring my pet?
Except for animals trained for special needs, we kindly ask for no pets to enter the convention. This is also a Marriott rule.
How do I register for Gaming events?
Warhorn is being used as a tool to slot tables for all Gaming events: http://www.warhorn.net/space-city-con/
Once you have created your free Warhorn account, you may register for the events you want. However, while there is no extra charge for these events, you must have a convention membership to attend.
Can I wear an outrageous/skimpy/dangerous costume?
Space City Con is a giant geek and nerd celebration, so we want you to have fun, but please remember we are a family-friendly event, and our host hotel will appreciate decorum. Costumes should be in good taste. This means they are not overly-revealing, offensive, or dangerous (large wings, spikes, etc). Please respect others.
What is there to do at Space City Con?
This is a geek festival, so anything that comes to mind when you think of the word “geek” can probably be found! We have RPGs, CCGs, table-top games, LARP, and board games, panels, costumes, artists & authors, comics, celebs, videos, discussions, a masquerade, concerts... the list goes on! We also have the pleasure of hosting many Texas fanclubs of various genres. Look for expanded video gaming in 2013!
I’d like to run a Gaming event at Space City Con. Can I?
Most likely, yes. Many events at Space City Con are run directly by staff or companies that sponsor the game being run. However, we are happy to hear from enthusiastic folks who want to run their favorite game at the convention. If we select your event and you run the event for at least 8 hours, you will get a complimentary Judge/GM badge for the day(s) your event runs.
Where and what can I eat at Space City Con?
One of the biggest complaints we hear about some conventions is about the super expensive, “concession stand” food. Luckily, the Marriott has a bar and restaurant, and the surrounding Westchase area is filled with tons of great places to eat! There is no shortage of great foods for every taste and budget!
